How does TAP handle personal information shared in chats?

TAP includes safeguards to discourage the sharing of personal data in chats, but some personal information may still be included. As the Data Controller, your institution is responsible for managing this data.

🔐 What counts as personal data?

Personal data is defined as any information relating to an identified or identifiable person. This includes:

  • Names, schools, or locations
  • Mentions of others (e.g. family member/ friend)
  • Any detail that could reasonably identify someone

Because this definition is broad, it’s difficult to automatically detect and block all personal data in chat transcripts.

🛡️ How does TAP help?

  • TAP’s safeguarding system flags and discourages the sharing of personal data in chats.
  • However, this system is not foolproof — some personal data may still be shared.

🧾 What is your responsibility?

As the institution using TAP, you are the Data Controller. This means:

  • You are responsible for managing and protecting any personal data shared in chats.
  • You should review chat transcripts and apply your own data protection policies as needed.
